Perhaps even one sponsored by a traditional publisher. No doubt that, along with the other issues, are primarily a result of a low budget but this is one game we’d definitely like to see get a big money sequel. We’re not big fans of the animation either, which runs at a comically high speed – like that old Flash animation with the fighting matchstick men – but would’ve looked much better with some Prince Of Persia style rotoscoping. There are only four stages and one of those, set in some luminous clouds, makes it so hard to see you begin to seriously question the game’s neon-coloured art style. The only real problem, apart from the single-player and online modes, is the lack of content. When it comes to gameplay mechanics Nidhogg is wonderfully assured, and the standard by which any other sword-fighting game will be measured in the future – whether they’re 2D or not.
